Silverstone 2010 - Day 3
2010-07-17 | Silverstone | Andreas Ehrhart
This morning started off by successfully completing brake test. After scrubbing in new tires, we next went to the acceleration event.
This is about driver 75m as fast as possible. The first driver was Andy Fricker who got very good times of 4.121 and 4.133. Simon Geiger was the second driver. He put down times of 4.136 and 4.166. These times were good enough to land a 15th place finish in this event. After acceleration, the car moved on to the skid pad event. In skid pad, the driver basically drives a figure eight--two times around a small circular track in one direction and two times in the other direction, all in one run. Andy succesfully completed two runs at 5.564 and 5.273. Jonathan Rebholz was the second driver who finshed each of his runs with times of 5.193 and 5.195. These times earned the team a 10th place finish in skid pad.
The last dyamic event of the day was autocross (known as 'sprint' here at Formula Student). Bill Murray was the first to drive. Both laps of 59.51 and 57.98 were the fastest of the day so far! Matthias Woelfl was the second driver. His first lap was a solid 58.5 and his second lap was a even faster 57.41. Both drivers showed great skill and put down excellent times! Matthias' time held as the fastest lap of the autocross event, earning the team a first place finish!
On the static event side, we found out in the early afternoon that the team placed 3rd in Business Presentation, 5th in Cost, and made it to Design finals. Design finals were held after autocross, and the team was able to very succesfully demonstrate their knowledge of the car. The judges were very impressed, enough so to award GFR with first place for design! After three competitions, GFR has been successful at winning the Desgin event each time!
Overall it was a really great day for the team! We look forward to seeing how the Endurance event finishes tomorrow and the overall results!
