GFR boosts CFR Analysis for 2014 Race Team

 

Global Formula Racing and Sabalcore Computing Inc. partner to boost CFD Analysis for the 2014 Race Team; Reduces compute time by 98%

 

Global Formula Racing (GFR) is pleased to announce a partnership with Sabalcore Computing Inc., a leading high performance computing (HPC) service company. Thanks to Sabalcore's HPC Cloud, GFR will be able to simulate external airflow quicker and with greater accuracy.

Global Formula Racing is an international cooperation between the BA Racing Team from Duale Hochschule Baden-Württemberg-Ravensburg (DHBW-R), Germany, and the Beaver Racing Team from Oregon State University (OSU), USA. GFR’s goal is to win competitions. In recent years the Team has increased performance by research, development, and testing of aerodynamics devices on both the electric and combustion cars. This has helped the Team win at least one competition every year for the past 4 seasons.

Challenges associated with aerodynamics are the almost infinite design possibilities. This challenge sparks interest in the minds of the Team’s young engineers. However, with limitations on manufacturing resources, time, and material only a few of their ideas can be realized within the time span of a season. To combat these constraints, the Team uses a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) program called STAR-CCM+™ that models external airflow around the car. The students can then analyze how each design will affect the car. Oregon State University computer labs run these simulations but the tradeoff between cell size and computing time leads to long waits between iterations or less accurate results due to computational resource restraints.

In hopes of reducing time, increasing accuracy, and increasing the number of design iterations per season the Team reached out to Sabalcore. Sabalcore offers high performance computing services via a cloud network. By using Sabalcore’s high performance servers the time per design iteration has been reduced by 98%! The remote graphical interface, rg3d™, with 3-D acceleration over WAN is made seamless by including the latest version of the CFD software STAR-CCM+™ provided by Cd-Adapco.

Sabalcore provides remote access to high performance computing resources on-demand that are specifically designed for scientific and engineering problems that require vast amounts of compute resources. The specialized service enables scientists and engineers to take advantage of large parallel computing systems without the upfront investment in computer hardware and long-term utility maintenance costs.  The service is accessible online from anywhere, anytime. This saves the end-user time and reduces costs.

With the partnership formed between GFR and Sabalcore benefits will be realized by both parties. Student’s creativity and learning will be expanded through the increased number of design iterations and accuracy resulting in more competitive GFR cars. Sabalcore will be proudly presented on both 2014 cars increasing their exposure of an excellent product and service.
